This morning we disembarked from Nieuw Statendam. The original plan was to take the train to Schiphol, but Rotterdam Centraal was closed for signal system changes (not that they cancelled our train tickets or notified us) so we took an airport transfer bus through the ship.
At Schiphol we said our goodbyes, as Lana is returning home, and Jen took the shuttle to the hotel to drop her bags, catching the same bus back to the airport. There, she caught a bus to the Museum Square. Today’s target: the Rijks Museum.
A beautiful building itself, a large number of famous works and artists are on display, including Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Monet, Vermeer, and more. Their feature piece is Rembrandt’s The Night Watch. It is enclosed in lots of glass, but a full size replica hangs in the next room and is easier to appreciate
After the Rijks, I went in search of food, and found a small neighbourhood restaurant. I had a grilled cheese, and was surprised to discover it had lots of grainy mustard and pickles in the mix. I was even more surprised to watch them replenish their beer supply with a hose from a pumper truck!
Returning to Schiphol, I picked up some grocery store solutions for dinner and breakfast, then had an early night. Big day tomorrow!
